Within my pieces, the text is hidden to a certain degree, to create an opportunity that challenges the viewer to move beyond the first glance, thereby becoming more engaged with the work. Very often the text is thickly painted onto the canvas so that it can expand beyond the typical two dimensional plane. It also grants me another opportunity to camouflage the text. Also, I’ve used other techniques to challenge the readability of the text such as using embroidery or clear mediums. By trying different methods of application and fonts, I’m searching for ways to both avert and attract attention to the paintings.
